Virgin Biker?
Never been on the back of a bike? Let’s face it. When it comes to getting into the saddle, a lot can go wrong if you’re not prepared. Take the following tips from the guys at Metric Thunder—some of the most experienced bikers in the biz—and make sure your first time is a good time.
Back of the Bike Tips:
- Relax. Make sure your body is not too stiff.
- As your bike leans, lean with it, particularly around corners. Just go with the bike.
- Before the ride, agree on a signal—like a good jab in the ribs—that says “slow the hell down.”
- Don’t get off the bike until your rider has both feet firmly on the ground.
- If your rider is dodging in and out of traffic, remember that low speed means low control.
- The more still you remain, the easier it will be for your rider to remain steady.
- Keep your eyes peeled. Watch the road to anticipate any sudden braking or accelerating.
- Lean forward during acceleration Do not place your body weight on the rider.
- Hold on to the rider during acceleration to steady yourself.
- Don’t distract the rider while moving. Obviously, their concentration needs to be on the road.
- Don appropriate pants, jacket and gloves.
- During braking, you will lunge forward slightly. Grip the the grab rail to steady yourself
- Wear a crash helmet. Make sure it’s the right size and strapped on correctly.
